I love telling stories - especially to kids. I can see their ears perk up at every mention of something they recognize, their brains churn when I say something they have never heard of, and their eyes light up when an idea pops into their heads. You almost never get that when telling a story to adults. We adults are jaded.
I have been telling my son a story every night before bed, since he was in kindergarten. These are stories I make up, featuring his favorite recurring characters. These characters travel through this and other worlds (think Jumanji meets the Mushroom Kingdom), they make friends with the most improbable creatures (think an angry turkey that uses a crossbow to shoot mangoes), and save the world from the most clueless villains you will ever meet (think "I'm gonna take over the world!"). Everything is inspired by what is happening around us - whether it's a holiday, the Olympics or even a thunderstorm. The possibilities are endless.
So, join me here on my journey to tell stories to children. Pick up one of my books from your favourite bookstore, and tell the little ones a story that they will never forget. Maybe, one day, they will make up their own stories for you. And may your ears perk up, your brain churn and your eyes light up like they once did.
